Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plays a vital role in supporting the development of a country. Information is vital in making decisions and ICT supports the processing, retrieving, storing and publishing of information. The Diploma in Information Technology programme is taught in English.

The Programme

This programme is a 2 ½ year programme which requires a total of 93 credit hours. The programme has been developed to fulfill the needs of the IT industry for programming-based personnel with emphasis on software quality. The first few semesters will cater to the fundamentals of IT skills such as programming, multimedia and database management. This will allow students to utilise their skills acquired and work in the industry to support the remaining years of their study.

Students will be exposed to subjects such as Fundamentals of Internet and Web Publishing, Internet Programming and Electronic Commerce, Human Computer Interaction, Algorithms and Data Structures, Multimedia Systems and Techniques, Object Oriented Programming and Software Quality & Testing. Graduates of the programme will be able to carry out programming using various programming languages. Emphasis is given to web-based programming to enable students to acquire various application programming competencies. Programming languages such as Java are some of the tools that students will be exposed to.

Students will also be able to understand the finer points of programming and how quality assurance is carried out to ensure quality software products. They will also be exposed to user interface design in web and internet-based environments.

Students are also required to undertake industrial training or a project paper which is to be completed within a semester. Industrial training requires students to work on an attachment in the IT industry to expose themselves to a real working environment and real work situations. The project paper will require students to apply programming and systems development skills and knowledge to develop an IT product.

This programme allows for entry into higher levels of IT education at undergraduate and subsequent postgraduate levels.

 

  • Pass SPM/SPMV with 3 credits including a pass in Mathematics; or

  • Other equivalent qualification which is recognized by the Malaysian Government; or

  • Relevant certificate which has obtained minimum standard or granted recognition of accreditation by MQA / LAN and/or JPA

English Proficiency Requirement

International students must possess the following minimum English Language proficiency requirement before being allowed to register for Faculty courses as listed in the respective programme structures: TOEFL score of 450 or IELTS band 4.

The validity period for TOEFL and IELTS is two (2) years from the date of the award.

Without such qualifications, international students are required to register for and pass the Intensive English Programme. This English programme will incur additional charges apart from the respective Programme Fee.

Graduates of the programme can become Programmers, Multimedia Application Developers and Web Portal and Application Developers. Apart from being Programmers, graduates can also fill the posts of Systems, Database and Network Administrators.
