Objectives

The Foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences is a holistic and integrated programme designed to achieve the following objectives :

• To provide students with adequate foundation work in subject areas that are fundamental to progress into the degree programmes offered by Tun Abdul Razak School of Government (TARSOG).
• To enhance students' understanding of social sciences and how individual behavior are formed and later affects society and organizations which will assist them in pursuing their degree programmes in leadership, economics and public administration and policy.
• To provide students who are new in the university life with the necessary skills and knowledge to enable them to manage their time and their academic activities in an effective manner.
• To enhance students' interpersonal and communication skills to enable them to function effectively and efficiently.
• To provide students with basic analytical and quantitative abilities and skills to prepare for more rigorous research in the degree programmes.
• To enable students to work effectively in a team to assist them in group projects and study groups.

This is a one-year programme designed to prepare students for the Bachelor of Arts (Government and Public Policy) (Hons), Bachelor of Arts (Leadership) (Hons) and Bachelor of Economics (Hons) offered by Razak School of Government. It offers courses which provide the students with basic skills, competencies and knowledge in English Language, Learning Skills, General Studies, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Sociology, Psychology, Management and PC applications..

Foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences is a unique programme specifically designed for full-time students. Students with only SPM or 'O' level or similar qualifications are required to complete 50 credit hours of the Foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences programme in order to continue to the degree programmes offered by Tun Abdul Razak School of Government (TARSOG).

The courses in this Foundation programme will be conducted by our dedicated and experienced academic staff who will continuously motivate and inspire the students to become excellent academic performers. Students will find that the study experience in TARSOG will be unique, enlightening, rewarding and enriching for everyone regardless of race, color and creed.

The Bachelor of Arts (Leadership) (Hons.) is a holistic and integrated programme designed to achieve the following objectives :

• To create effective and efficient managerial leaders in the public and private sectors.
• To give students a deep, practical understanding of the relationship and differences between management and leadership.
• To provide students with the skills and knowledge to lead, solve problems and make changes effectively.
• To enhance students' interpersonal and communication skills to enable them to function effectively and efficiently and contribute to enhance the performance of the public and private organisations.
• To enhance their understanding of cross-cultural management practices so that they can lead in multicultural settings and organisations.
• To guide students in developing their skills in performing leadership roles.
• To provide adequate foundation work in subject areas that are fundamental to a liberal, professionally-oriented education and to prepare for career objectives including graduate work.
• To ensure development of analytical and quantitative abilities and skills for defining and solving problems relevant to the public sector.

TARSOG's Bachelor of Arts (Leadership) (Hons.) is a unique programme specifically designed for full-time students, and is a three-year programme by coursework. In the final semester, students will be required to undergo internships and research projects in recognised agencies or departments in the public, government and private sector which aims at integrating theory and practice and to improve their leadership, managerial and interpersonal skills. Students will also be involved in organising related activities namely field trips, guest lectures, community development events, annual dinners and talks and recreational activities during the duration of the programme. All these practical activities will develop the students' personalities, character, and managerial leadership qualities required for them to work effectively and efficiently in myriad organisations.

• To provide an academic program with sufficient flexibility to meet both the needs of students without fixed career objective and the needs of those already in the public service who wish to enhance their skills or prepare themselves for career enhancement.
• To provide adequate foundation work in subject areas that are fundamental to a liberal, professionally-oriented education and to prepare for career objectives including graduate work.
• To enhance understanding of economic, legal, political, and governmental institutions, systems and processes pertinent to the progress and development of the public sector.
• To ensure development of analytical and quantitative abilities and skills for defining and solving problems relevant to the public sector.
• To develop interpersonal abilities and skills to be able to function effectively and efficiently in order to enhance the performance of the public sector.
• To provide understanding of human behavior, i.e. individual, group and organisational, including the development of abilities and skills for analyzing and coping with behavioral situations in the public sector.

This Bachelor of Arts (Government & Public Policy) (Hons.) is unique and specifically designed for full-time students and it is a three-year programme by coursework. Students of TARSOG will complete their degree programme with internships intended to provide hands-on experience in managing and working in the public sector. Internship programmes will be developed in collaboration with public sector agencies and students will register after the completion of all required courses.

The Bachelor of Economics (Hons.) is a holistic and integrated programme designed to achieve the following objectives :

• To stimulate students intellectually through the study of economics and to lead them to appreciate its applicability to a range of issues and its relevance in a variety of contexts.
• To develop familiarity with the major facts and institutions of the Malaysian economy, regional economies and the world economy.
• To nurture students who are multidisciplinary and able to link economics with other disciplines that come from growing industries enabling them to have a holistic and practical view of the world.
• To develop a fundamental understanding of modern economic theory, of its scope and limitations, and of its applications in the interpretation of facts and the formulation of policy.
• To equip students with the relevant mathematical, statistical and econometric skills, and experience in the use of appropriate computer software.
• To develop in students the ability to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired to the solution of theoretical and applied problems in economics, and an appreciation of the appropriate level of abstraction in the construction of models as solution tools.
